Evaluation and Diagnosis

Sometimes a condition is obvious: a bone fracture, or a failing joint in the hip or knee, or back pain. Sometimes the cause is easily determined: a recent accident or lingering injury, or perhaps age-related disease. On occasion, the problems and their causes aren't so plain.

In all cases, the expertise of specially trained doctors is required to arrive at an accurate, comprehensive diagnosis. Our medical staff includes board-certified physicians who specialize in orthopedics, neurosurgery and imaging. These doctors will examine both your body and your medical history, scrutinize your ailment or injury, and employ a variety of tools and information to determine the cause of your problem and outline a course of treatment.

Diagnostic images such as x-rays, MRI and CT scans may be utilized to look inside your body and evaluate the state of bones, joints, and tissue. Therapists may be involved to assess strength, flexibility, range of motion, and other measures. Laboratory tests may be ordered to identify the presence and extent of disease on bones or tissue. Whoever or whatever may be required to help doctors reach a diagnosis is available through Georgetown Hospital System Bone/Joint/Spine services, all ready to help our patients take the first steps toward recovery.

Computer Assisted Surgery

An imageless computer-assisted system is being used by surgeons in some hip and knee replacement procedures at Georgetown Hospital System’s Waccamaw Community Hospital. The use of the computer system allows for more accurate positioning of the implants which over time may mean less wear and increased longevity of the implanted prosthetic.  Learn more about new computer assisted surgery procedures.

Rehabilitation

Recovering from bone, back, muscle or joint damage doesn't always end with repair. Often rehabilitation is required. That's why Georgetown Hospital System offers outpatient physical, occupational and speech rehabilitation services at NextStep Rehabilitation facilities throughout the area.
